<aside> đź’ˇ All translation work requires resources. These resources include dictionaries, grammars, and other reference works. Bible translation requires further resources. Bible translators need a specialized set of resources for translating the Bible from one language into another. This lesson provides an overview of the process for creating those specialized translation resources that are needed to translate books of the Bible. This should not be confused with the process for translating the Bible into another language. This is the process for creating a set of resources in a Gateway/Resource Language for Bible translators to use in drafting and checking a clear, accurate, and natural Bible translation in their own language.

Ideally, a large group would be trained to do the GLT Cycle and then the GST Cycle all the way through the publishing phase for 2-4 books. The reason for this is everyone needs to understand the purpose of the resource they are creating. What we have seen is if people just work on creating a Literal Text they are so concerned people won’t understand things, they keep adding explanations and clarifications that are not in the Biblical texts. The clear insight into the original Biblical texts is lost. If people only work on the Simplified Text they make it to wooden and close to the original so the translators to not gain an understanding of meaning of the original texts. Once everyone understands clearly how the tools work and the purpose of each one, we would recommend they break into three separate teams if possible: GLT, GST, and Additional Resources. The first two teams would work simultaneously on a book with the third group completing the resource package once they were finished. They could have a language expert translate translationAcademy (either ahead of time or simultaneously), or the Additional Resources team could do it in conjunction with the other resources for each book.
Again, “ideally” the initial group would include trainers who would begin training Bible translators to do translation as soon as the first few books and their resources were complete.
You can draft using software, but we recommend using pen and paper for the first few books. This enables your team to master the process before they need to master software tools. Once they have practiced on several books and know the process well, we recommend using Scribe SE. That is free and open software designed for Bible translators. It contains all the resources you will need for creating the Literal and Simplified texts in your language. You may draft straight from the ULT and UST, but you may want other texts for reference.
