CCBT Practicum – Book Process Overview

Facilitator Guide

Duration: 120 minutes

Focus of Session: This session will allow groups to document the steps in their Bible translation process, identify handoffs, and detect gaps or deficiencies in what they are currently doing. It will also encourage them to think beyond the task of Bible translation and consider the purpose of having a Bible and how to employ it in maturing the saints.

Method: Socratic method using a role-play simulation.

Introduction

Explain that manufacturing firms will often create wireframes or flow charts to describe their manufacturing process. Bible translation can be likened in some respects to a manufacturing process. However, there are some very important components that elevate Bible translation beyond a manufacturing mindset. This activity will help us identify them and decide how best to handle them.

Thought Exercise

Objective: Participants will identify core components to accomplishing a goal.

Welcome everyone to your session. Ask them to describe the steps necessary for cooking a favorite meal. Identify some of the key components of putting a meal together and list them on a board or flipchart:

Explain that Bible translation is similar in many ways to preparing a meal. This exercise will find those similarities and help establish both a “recipe” for Bible translation and identify good practices that will insure a quality product.

Bible Translation Simulation

Objective: Participants will gain insight into the process of Bible translation.

The purpose of this activity is to identify all the steps in Bible translation and to determine the intermediate products that are created as a result of the Bible translation process. This activity should also identify tools, techniques, and processes that contribute to generating a quality translation.

This is a whole group activity. Explain that this is going to be a simulation. While we won’t be doing any actual Bible translation, we will simulate the process in order to identify all the steps and requirements at each phase. We will identify inputs and outputs at each step and will use this information to refine the processes already in place. Tell them that you are going to assign roles to participants, but not to worry. Since this is only a simulation, they will not be required to actually perform the roles, but only stand in for the process.
