CCBT Practicum – Change Management

Facilitator Guide

Duration: 90 minutes

Focus of Session: Two forces that cause resistance to change are entropy and inertia, concepts borrowed from the science of physics. Entropy is the tendency for things to move from being simple to being complex. Inertia is the tendency for things to continue along the way they are unless acted upon by something from the outside. This session will look at strategies to overcome these two forces and implement successful change.

Method: Socratic method using open discussion and breakout groups.

Introduction

Use this time to set the tone for this session by asking questions and prompting student activity. While this session will contain a lot of information, much of it new to participants, it is important that they discover this information for themselves. Your goal as facilitator is to prepare them to assess the factors that resist change in their organization and provide tools they can use to overcome that resistance.

Cross Your Arms Activity

Objective: Participants will warm-up with a physical activity to engage their minds with the session.

Welcome everyone to your session. Announce that you are going to start with some skill exercises. Have everyone stand and cross their arms. Ask them to note which arm is in front and which is in back. Have them uncross their arms and then recross them with the other arm on top. Ask:

Point out that change management isn’t often difficult, but it is nearly always uncomfortable.
