Learner engagement

When you compare the differences between the boring class and the interesting class, you can usually summarize them in a single concept: learner engagement. The most enjoyable classes are typically those where the learners are most engaged and involved in the class.  This raises the question: how do we engage our learners? Florida State University professor John M. Keller created a model of motivational design intended to engage learners by focusing on four strategic components covered by the acronym ARCS.

This section will focus on strategies that secures attention within the first few minutes of starting a class and maintains it throughout through relevant training content. We will also look at how to build learner confidence through active participation and satisfaction with the desired outcome.

The first step as a presenter is to overcome learner inattention. You must somehow create an interest in what you have to say and sustain that interest over the entire length of your presentation. Most public speaking courses advise you to use a challenging question, a provocative statement, a story, or anecdote to begin a speech. Presenters often have the option of using an opener or an icebreaker activity to get their learners’ attention.
