You can check your Literal and Simplified texts using the English translationNotes in gatewayEdit. You should follow the guidelines for each potential translation issue/topic in the Rubric to make sure that you are translating them as directed for each resource. However, you may want your team to learn these concepts more deeply. This will increase their speed and accuracy as they develop resources. It will also equip them to help Bible translators when they are trying to find the best way to address these translation issues in their own languages. Ideally, you would not try to teach all of the possible issues tagged in the translationNotes in 3 John. Even though it is a short book, there are 20 different potential translation issues. We would recommend choosing 6 at the most that you think might be the biggest problem for languages that will use your translation resources. How do you decide which might be the biggest problems?

NOTE: Linguists have many specialized terms for specific features of languages. These terms are like a shorthand code. We decided not to use that specialized vocabulary because it is often difficult to translate into a Resource Language. Even if the language has the specialized vocabulary needed for the terms, few people who speak it as a second language will know the specialized words. For that reason, in the training we’ve used descriptions instead. We recommend you do the same in your resources and training. That will make them easier for Bible translators to use. Here we have included the description and put the specialized words in parenthesis. This way if you are comfortable with the technical terms, you can know confidently to which one we are referring.

Potential Translation Issues in 3 John

Once you’ve decided which topics to focus on, you’ll want to decide in how much detail you want to teach them. You will need to check all of them. We have a Powerpoint that will enable you to do that. But then you will want to look at the Lesson Plan for each topic and decide how much time you want to spend teaching it.

  1. You could have everyone read the translationAcademy article for a topic and then discuss it. If your team is highly educated and already comfortable with most of the topics, this may be all that is needed. They just need to understand how the topic may impact translation work and how to account for it in various resources.
  2. You could go the Powerpoint in the Lesson Plan for that topic and just do an overview of it, then look at the verses in 3 John and decide how to translate it in the Literal and Simplified Texts.
  3. You may sense that it will be difficult to know how to address a certain translation issue in your Resource Language or in the languages that will be using your resources. Or your team may discover that a certain issue is a particular challenge. If so, you may want to do the entire lesson plan on that issue. The lessons usually take about an hour. It will take longer if you decide you need to prepare training on the topic to give to others.
